Australia covers 7,692,300 sq km (2,969,228 sq miles), making it the 6th largest country in the world and just slightly smaller than the United States. Depending on how you look at it, Australia is the smallest continent or the largest island in the world - and the least populated. It is located in the geographical region of Oceania, along with more than 25,000 islands. The islands are scattered across the enormous expanse of the South Pacific.

1. It
is compulsory to vote in Australian political elections.   
2. 29 per cent of red back spider bites comes when people are putting on their shoes - the spiders hide in them.
3. The largest cattle station (farm ) in Australia is the same size as the country of Belgium.
4. The Sydney Harbour Bridge is known locally as  "the coathanger".
5. There are 58 million kangaroos - more than twice the number of humans.
